Introduction

Following the flood events that affected the Emilia-Romagna Region in May 2023, on the basis of an Agreement signed between the Emilia-Romagna Region, the Civil Protection, The University of Parma and the University of Padova, the computing power of the Big Data Platform marghERita was made available to this large working group, which was then able to implement new algorithms to simulate flood phenomena on the regional territory and apply models to predict the routes of water when it overflows from rivers in order to prevent consequences due to flooding of watercourse basins.

Thanks to supercomputing and big data, these simulations not only help to define actions for the prevention of environmental risks, but can also help to promptly intervene in the face of extreme climatic phenomena.
